ABOUT ME

Madeline (Maddie) Alvendia, B.A., E.d.M., is an educator, activist, and life-long learner based in Oakland, California. She received her B.A. in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she graduated in three years. She received her E.d.M. (Master's in Education) from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education in May 2019. She spent 4 years teaching middle school and high school History, Civics, Government, Social Studies, Ethnic Studies, and AP History. She has experience as a classroom teacher, a private tutor, an online teacher, a conference facilitator, a faculty member for incarcerated students, an equity-team collaborator, curriculum designer, book contributor, teaching abroad in China, and more. She is also the James Madison Memorial Foundation Fellow from the state of Nevada in 2018. In addition, she also teaches at Mount Tamalpais College teaching college history courses to incarcerated students at San Quentin Prison.

She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, in a small predominantly white suburb. Her family was one of the only multiracial families in the area, since her father is an immigrant from the Philippines and her mother is white and from Chicago. Her upbringing as an isolated multiracial woman of color motivated her to pursue anti-racist pedagogy and teaching in college, graduate school, and in her career. She is passionate about educational equity, race and ethnicity identity development and critical consciousness in K-12 schools, emancipatory and liberatory education for students of color, incarcerated students and prison education, and dismantling oppressive systems through education.
